Kaltental Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, in chief a mitre Or with scarves of the same, flanked at dexter by a key Argent in pale and at sinister by an arrow Argent in pale, in base a triangular gridiron.
Meaning:
The town was established in 1971 by a merger of Blonhofen market town with the municipalities of Aufkirch and Frankenhofen. The name of the new market town was chosen arbitrarily without any relationship to history. All entities had in common that they were located in the Cold Valley (German: Kaltes Tal). The name is referring to Jakob of Kaltental and the Lordship of Kaltental. The tinctures red and white and the mitre are alluding to the Bishopric of Augsburg, which owned all essential rights in the valley. Cardinal Peter I of Schaumberg (1424 - 1469), Bishop of Augsburg built the so called cardinal's road in 1440, which crossed the valley from North to South and which connected the Bishopric with its possessions around Füssen. Thus the bishopric avoided paying toll to Bayern. The three former entities are represented by the attributes of their local patron saints as follows: St. Peter by key representing Aufkirch, St. Sebastian by arrow representing Blonhofen, and St. Lawrence by gridiron representing Frankenhofen. St. Sebastian was displayed on local seals of Blonhofen since 1686 and was introduced in its arms in 1835 on behalf of the local council. A chapel dedicated to the saint had been built as remembrance on a vow given to him in 1735 on occasion of a plague.
