Traditionally the city used a plain horizontal black over green over red tricolour, which had been described also in the Hauptsatzungen of 1994 and 1995. The colours are taken from the local coat of arms (red shield, black bull, green cloverstems).

    Parchim Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a bull's head caboshed Sable, crowned Or, armed Sable with three tapes Or around each horn, accompanied by two impending facetted 6-point stars Or above the ears and two cloverstems Vert beneath the ears, issuant from head a pair of antlers Or.
    Meaning:
Parchim was first mentioned in 1170 in a dade of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa. The settlement probably gained city rights by Prince Heinrich Borwin II of Rostock before 1226. Minor privileges had been already granted before by Prince Heinrich Borwin I of Mecklenburg. Since 1229 the city belonged to the Lordship of Parchim and a New Town was founded by Lord Pribislaw I of Parchim. There was struggle about both cities between the Counts of Schwerin, the Dukes of Saxony and the Margraves of Brandenburg. Between 1272 and 1275 Lord Nikolaus I of Werle conquered both cities, which were united in 1282. When the Lords of Werle died out, the city became a posession of the Dukes of Mecklenburg in 1436.
The arms are based on a city seal, known by prints since 1293. The bull' head caboshed was the heraldic animal of the Parchim Richenberg branch of the Princes of Mecklenburg. There is not much known about the other parts. The antler might allude to local riches of deer, which is however not certain. Stars and cloverstems probably are mere decorating attachments.

The arms were granted on 10 April 1858 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Tricolours are in use since 1900. Flag and arms were published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.21
