Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a silver (= white) sailing ship with three masts sailing across blue and silver (= white) waves.
Meaning:
The market town of Elmshorn gained the rank of a city in 1877. In 1903 the city was entitled to adopt a coat of arms, which had been granted on 20 November 1903 by Emperor Wilhelm II. The new version abolished the mural crown.
Whaling and merchant shipping had been the base of the local economy in the 19th century. Thus the city was called "the little Hamburg". The ship is said to be the FLORA, the last whaling vessel of the city, furthermore it is an allusion to the journeys to Grönland whaling grounds. The colours red, white and blue are those of Schleswig-Holstein.
