Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In the base of a red shield is a green mountain having three peaks. The mountain is superimposed by a silver (= white) fess wavy. On top of the mountain stands a silver (= white) embattled castle having three levels. The castle has an open gate with a golden (= yellow) portcullis. The castle is flanked by two golden (= yellow) 6-point stars.
Meaning:
The castle is representing the times, when Pinneberg had been capital of a county having the same name. Location and castle had been mentioned first in 1531. The castle was residence of the Pinneberg branch line of the counts of Schauenburg for a while. When the Schauenburg kin died out in 1640 the castle deteriorated and was demolished in 1720. In the 18th century Pinneberg was seat of a "Drost", a bailiff of the king of Denmark. In 1826 Pinneberg gained the rank of a market town (Flecken). Later a station of the Altona-Kiel-Railways was established. Finally in 1875 the town gained the rank of a city. The origin of the stars is not known. The mountain is representing the Schloßberg and the fess wavy the little Pinnau river.
