Dippoldiswalde Coat of Arms

Shield Or, issuant from base a bearded hermit, nimbed Or and dressed Azure with two strings Maron in saltire, in chief two eradicated conifers proper in saltire, each having three pine cones Maron.
Meaning:
The existence of a city ,which had been founded a few years earlier under a castle of the Margraves of Meißen, was first reported in 1218. A reason for the grant had been the prospection of silver ore, first mentioned in 1266 but finally not being profitable. It was replaced by mining of copper and lead in during the late Medieval. The settlement was called a city in 1289, was walled in the 14th century and had a proper mayor and council in 1403. An expanded lordship belonged to the local castle, which was enfeoffed to the Burgraves of Dohna, who established a local mint. City, castle and lordship belonged to the Electorate of Sachsen since 1569. Besides mining agriculture and textiles industries had been the main business lines. The city was burnt down during the 30-Years-War (1618 – 1648). Mining declined and was finished in 1864. The oldest known city arms from 1403 just displayed the trees in saltire. The hermit was added in 1588. The slings of his coat first appeared on a secret seal from the 12 June 1730. They are based on a misinterpretation and probably had been simply the ends of a collar. The arms are canting, as due to a legend the city was founded by the hermit Dippoldus. The trees are symbolising a wood (German: Wald). The saltire is also alluding to the burgraves, whose family arms displayed two attires in saltire.
