Glashütte Coat of Arms

Renaissance shield parted per fess, above Or hammer and mallet Sable in saltire, beneath Gules a dialplate Argent charged with Roman numerals Sable and a sun with face of the same in centre.
Meaning:
As its name says, the city had its origin as a glass kiln of the Burgraviate of Dohna. During the 14th century two hammer mills were established. The settlement was first mentioned in 1445. It had been a place of silver mining since then. It had a mining law since 1490, a headmaster of mining in 1501 and gained mining and city rights according to the pattern of Annaberg in 1506. In 1554 members of the mining authorities gained the local high level cognisance. In 1634 city and mining facilities were destroyed. Since then mining declined and was ended completely in 1875. In 1845 the government appointed Ferdinand Adolf Lange as commissioner for the production of clocks. In 1878 a school for clockmakers was established. The oldest city seal from 1561 only displayed hammer and mallet as symbols of mining, the dialplate as symbol of clock making was added in 1912.
