Tharandt Borough Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess, above Gules with base Vert and a ruin Argent between trees Vert, beneath Argent a pomegranate proper with one open fruit and four leaves.
Meaning:
Tharandt had been a castle of the Margraves of Meißen, first mentioned in 1216. It became a base of peopling in the Tharandt Wood and was seat of a reeve of the margraves in the 14th century. Beneath the castle in the 15th century a little town developed, first mentioned as Granaten in 1482. The town gained city rights in 1609 together with mayor, council and low level cognisance. In 1792 mineral springs were discovered and the city became a spa. In 1811 a school for forestry was founded, which became a governmental Academy of Forestry in 1816. The local castle, built in 1473, decayed after 1568, when the seat of a local district was transferred from Tharandt to Grillenburg. The upper half of the arms displays the remains of that castle. The pomegranate (German: Granatapfel or simply Granat) is canting and alluding to the old name of Tharandt.
