Gyhum Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Vert, issuant from base St. Margaret of Antioch Argent, hair Or, crowned and nimbed Or, holding a staff-cross Or with both hands, base Sable a dragon couchant Argent.
Meaning:
St. Margaret, the local patron saint, is one of the 14 Holy Helpers. Being christianised she became imprisoned and acc. to a legend was threatened there by a dragon, which is said to be the enchanted local prefect, who had tried to harass her before. Acc. to the legend she ousted him by making the sign of the cross.

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Azure, in chief a church Argent, in base on oak leaf Or connected with two acorns of the same.
Meaning:
The church is the local church before the destruction of its belfry in 1875. The oak parts are referring to local forests.

Zeven Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield parted per pale, at dexter Gules a pair of keys in saltire, at sinister Or, issuant from a kettle Sable St. Vitus, dressed Gules and nimbed Argent, holding in his left hand a book Sable and in his right hand a palm frond Vert.
Meaning:
St. Vitus, who had been tormented in a kettle, filled with boiling oil, was patron saint of a Benedictian nunnery in nearby Heeslingen since 1141, which had been secularised in 1648. Since then he is considered to be the patron saint of the city. The crossed keys are reminding on the rule of the Archbishopric of Bremen over the centuries.
