Bützow Coat of Arms

Shield Gules two croziers Or in saltire, superimposed by a mitre of the same.
Meaning:
Bützow was first mentioned in 1229 and gained city rights in 1236, granted by Bishop Brunward of Schwerin. Since 1239 Bützow was the main residence of the bishops and seat of the administration of the bishopric. At the end of the 30-Years-War it became a dominion of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, together with the Principality of Schwerin. The arms are based on a city seal with prints from 1346. The mitre was smaller and placed between both croziers in chief. The croziers are alluding to the Bishops of Schwerin as founders and local rulers for centuries. The current pattern was fixed in 1858 and abolished in 1943, when under NS rule another coat of arms was introduced, displaying a red fortress with a blue inescutcheon between its towers, charged with a golden swastika. It was re-established in 1945 with slight modifications.
