Meaning:
The oldest seal of Rotenburg from 1248 with prints since 1259 displays a saint or bishop in front of a city. This design also appeared in city seals since 1266 until the 17th century, sometimes without the city architecture. The saint was interpreted either as St. James or as St. Wigbert. In the 17th century local guilds used a trefoil and a star on their seals. The depiction of Otto Hupp is based on a city seal from 1664. The linden branch on a mountain first appeared in the armourial of Siebmacher(1605). The arms have not changed since then.
