Zwiesel Coat of Arms

Shield Or chausee embowed Gules, over all a knight statant in armour Azure, holding by his right hand a sword of the same in bend, hilted and braided Or, and by his left hand a shield in bend sinister, parted per pale, at dexter Or a demi-eagle Sable couped per pale, at sinister lozengy of Argent and Azure.
Meaning:
Zwiesel is located in a loop in the valley of Schwarzer Regen, a river. It was first mentioned as a market town in 1312 and gained city rights in 1904. The V-shaped line is symbolising the valley and thus canting, for the name means "tip" or "point". The shield displays the differentiated imperial eagle and the Bavarian lozenges and is alluding to Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, who granted the area as a fiefdom to Hartwig of Degenberg in 1342. After his kin had died out, the area was acquired by Bayern in 1602. Since then town seals had been permanently in use. The knight in armour is symbolising the feistiness of the Bavarian possession in the neighbourhood of Bohemia.
