Coat of Arms

Shield Vert two fish haurient addorsed Argent flanked by two 6-point stars Argent.
Meaning:
Saalfeld is the seat of Saalfeld-Rudolfstadt County. In 1057 Queen Richeza donated Saalfeld and the Orla Shire to the Archbishopric of Köln. Archbishop Anno of Köln founded the Benedictine Monastery of St. Peter in 1074, replacing the royal court that had been there long before. The monastery gained large estates in the surroundings of Saalfeld. The estates were ruled by reeves of the German kings. In 1346 the Wettin kin acquired the bailiwick over Saalfeld and established its own reeves. Saalfeld was mentioned as a Free Imperial City in 1199 and the abbot was called an Imperial Prince since 1497, thus the region was more or less under direct imperial rule. The German kings donated Saalfeld to the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1208. They ruled it as a Bohemian fiefdom since 1346 and as vassals of the Wettin kin since 1389. It became later a possession of various Saxonian duchies and was seat of the branch of Sachsen-Saalfeld since 1677. The sovereignty however remained in the hands of Sachsen-Gotha. The fish on the arms are connected at their dorsal fins. They appeared on arms from the 14th century, however not as main charge. Since the middle of the 15th century the fish had been the only charges. They are alluding to the privilege of fishing, granted to the city in 1346 by the Counts of Schwarzburg. The stars were added in 1803 and are a mere decoration.
