Wasungen Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a castle Argent masoned Sable with windows Sable and port Azure, in central chief an impending inescutcheon, charged with a hen statant Sable on top of a triplemount (that says at least the blazon) Vert.
Meaning:
Wasungen was first mentioned in 874, when it was donated to the Fulda Abbey. Around 1190 it was a market town and ruled by the Lords of Wasungen. The lords strengthened the town and gained city rights in 1308 from the Counts of Henneberg, local rulers of the area. It became a condominion of the Wettin kin in 1583, a part of Sachsen-Gotha in 1660, of Sachsen-Meiningen in 1672. In the so called Wasungen War the city was temporarily occupied in 1747 by troops of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, which had to withdraw in 1748. The whole private little war was more reminiscent of operetta then a real war, and the cause was extremely futile. The arms are based on the oldest city seal from 1420, which is kept in the Meiningen State Archive. The inescutcheon is referring to the Counts of Henneberg as former rulers and the castle is stressing the character of a city.

The arms are traditional. The colours of the banner probably have never been approved officially and are those of Sachsen-Meiningen.

The swords are symbolising a local battle in 1228 between the Counts of Henneberg and the Bishops of Würzburg. The balls are an attribute of St. Nicholas, the local patron saint. The chief is referring to the local cultivation of cherries.
