Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a white flag, horizontally divided by two red stripes. The coat of arms is between the stripes and shifted to the hoist.

Kaltenkirchen Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red shield is a silver (= white) nettle leaf. The leaf is superimposed by a red church tower with a blue spire and flanked by two blue oak leaves.
Meaning:
The tower of the parish church, dedicated to St.Michael, is the characteristic landmark of the city. Representing also the whole church the tower is a canting element. Church and village had been already mentioned in 1301. Without any doubt both are much older. Kaltenkirchen gained city rights in 1973. The leaves are alluding to the wood, which had been cleared in the medieval to give room for the settlement. The nettle leaf is alluding to the counts of Holstein and the colours are those of Schleswig-Holstein.

The flag was approved on 8 May 1978. The coat of arms was approved on 18 July 1974. The artists are Theodor Brix and Wilhelm Horst Lippert .
