Pfullendorf Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black eagle armed and tongued red.
Meaning:
Pfullendorf uses the Imperial eagle as its arms, already since the 13th century. Pfullendorf was a market town in the early 12th century owned by the Counts of Pfullendorf, the settlement gained city rights in 1220 from Emperor Friedrich II. Since 1180 it was a possession of the Staufen Dukes of Swabia. From ca. 1270 until 1802 the city was a free imperial city and from 1803 onwards it was part of Baden. As an imperial city Pfullendorf had the right to use the Imperial eagle. Unlike many other cities, the eagle remained the one-headed kind, even after the Emperors used a double-headed eagle. Similarly Pfullendorf never added an inescutcheon with local symbols. Red and white was one set of the traditional flag colours of free imperial cities.
