Handewitt Municipal Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per fess. Above in a golden (= yellow) field is a blue, statant lion. Below in a green field is a golden (= yellow) wreath having eight leaves and eight acorns.
Meaning:
Elements of the former municipalities of Handewitt and Jarplund-Weding have been combined in the new arms. The lion appears on the arms of the county and of the Kingdom of Denmark as well. Handewitt is located straight south of the Danish border. The lion is a weaker form of the symbols of both, Denmark and the county. The lion had the same meaning in the old arms of Handewitt. The intertwined branches of oak are symbolizing the former municipalities of Ellund, Gottrupel, Handewitt, Haurup, Hüllerup, Jarplund, Timmersiek and Weding.

Flag and coat of arms were approved on 24 June 2008. The artist is Egon Ossowski from Handewitt.

Handewitt Municipal Coat of Arms 1988

The shield is divided per fess. Above in a golden (= yellow) field is a blue, statant lion. Below in a blue field are six golden (= yellow) cornstalks superimposed by ahorseshoe of the same colour.
Meaning:
In contradiction to the information above the lion here should allude to the former county of Flensburg-Land, which had the same lion in its arms. It is the same with the colours blue and yellow. The six stalks are reminding on the change of the years 1974 and 1975, when the municipalities of Handewitt, Ellund, Gottrupel, Timmersiek, Haurup and Hüllerup merged. The horseshoe is alluding to the horse markets and as a symbol of good luck is also expressing hope for a prosperous future.

The flag was approved on 24 November 1994. The coat of arms was approved on 17 October 1988. Flag and coat of arms were abolished on 29 February 2008. The artists are Uwe Nagel and Ingelore Ossowski.

It is a yellow - green - yellow - green - yellow vertical 5-stripes flag. The proportions are approx. 3:1:3:1:19. The figures of the coat of arms without shield are in the centre of the broad yellow stripe in the flyend.

Jarplund-Weding Municipal Coat of Arms 1994

In a golden (= yellow) field is a green spade. On both sides are offsprings of oak having two leaves and one acorn each.
Meaning:
The municipality was established in 1973 a a merger of Jarplund and Weding. The suffix "-lund" is the Danish word for a grove. Weding is derived from the Danish word "våd" (= wet). Both entities were located at the edge of the Jarplund swamp. The digging of peat was an important business line in the past, for peat was needed as winter fuel. The spade is alluding to peat digging. The oak branches are representing Jarplund. The offsprings from the same "stem" are symbolizing the close relationships between both former entities. Source: Reißmann 1997, p.194

The flag was approved on 18 February 1998. The coat of arms was approved on 26 April 1994. Flag and coat of arms were abolished on 29 February 2008. The artist is Egon Ossowski from Handewitt.
