Schmelz Coat of Arms

Shield Argent parted by a cross invected Gules, over all an inescutcheon Argent with base Vert, a smelting furnace Sable masoned Argent with tapping on base and blazing flame in chief, both Gules.
Meaning:
The municipality was established in 1936 by a merger Bettingen and Außen. The name was chosen due to the iron furnaces in the Prims Valley. The older one in Bettingen was already mentioned as ruined in the 16th century. Around 1720 Marquis Charles Louis de Lénoncourt established a new furnace, which closed in 1870. The cross invected is taken from his family arms. The smelting furnace (German: Schmelzofen or simply Schmelze) is of course canting.

The arms were approved in 1953 by Minister of Interior of Saarland and the flag colours in 1954. Please not that the colours were approved as "white and red", but they are displayed on the flags the other way round, which was confirmed by the local administration.
