Traunstein County Banner

Uses an unofficial banner, white-blue stripes with the coat-of-arms and scrolls saying Landkreis Traunstein. My drawing is made according to a photo made by Erich Dieter Linder. The flag has no chance of being officially approved since the combination of white-blue stripes is reserved for the Bavarian state flag. Still, this kind of design seems to be commonplace for municipalities without an official flag. Traunstein County had no flag until the 1972 municipal reform, when parts of Laufen county were added.

Traunstein County Coat of Arms

The panther is taken from the arms of the Counts of Krainburg-Ortenburg, of the Spanheim kin, who owned several estates in the area in the early Middle Ages. They founded in 1255 the city of Trostberg. The lower sinister quarter shows the canting arms of the Augustine Monastery of Baumburg (English: "tree-castle"), which ruled a large part of the northern county. The eagle is taken from the arms of the Bishopric of Chiemsee (1216 - 1808), which had been a vassal of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Its arms displayed the eagle in the dexter half and a goldencrozier in a red field in the sinister half.

The coat of arms was approved on 21 March 1955 and confirmed on 14 May 1976. The banner was adopted ca. 1989, according to Dirk Schönberger and is used without approval.
