Mühlhausen Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess, above Or a demi-eagle issuant Sable armed Gules, beneath Gules a stone spindle Argent.
Meaning:
Mühlhausen was first mentioned as a village in 775, as seat of a palatine with a royal court since 974. At least since 1180 Mühlhausen was a Free Imperial City. At the beginning of the 14th century the city controlled 19 villages and 43 deserted villages. In 1525 it was a centre of the German peasants insurrection, led by Thomas Müntzer. In times of the GDR the city had the epithet "Thomas-Müntzer-Stadt". The pattern changed in details. The eagle was crowned in 1530. Two spindles had been on the eagle's wings in the early 20th century. In the 17th century the eagle was superimposed by the spindle in fess. The eagle is alluding to the status of a Free Imperial City. The stone spindle (German: Mühleisen) is a canting element and alluding to the name giving mill of the Franconian settlement of Molinhuso. The existence of these arms of the Free Imperial City is proven since the 15th century.
