It is a black - white vertical bicolour. The coat of arms is shifted to the top.

Langenau Coat of Arms

The shield is divided per fess. Above in a golden (= yellow) field is a black horse forcene. Below the shield is divided per pale. The dexter side displays a silver (= white) gonfanon with three tails in a red field. The sinister side is divided per fess into black over silver (= white).
Meaning:
In 1376 the Count of Werdenberg gained permission from Emperor Karl IV, to make Langenau a city. The city of Ulm however abolished these rights resp. made them invalid in 1377. The affiliation with Ulm for centuries caused a lot of obstacles and hindered the further development. Langenau remained a market town and finally gained city rights in 1848. The horse is symbolizing horse breeding. The gonfanon is alluding to the Counts of Werdenberg, while the colours black and white are those of the city of Ulm.

According to Stefan Schwoon the mayor the colours of the flag had been fixed in 1886 and according to Stadler 1971 the coat of arms was approved in the same year.
