Falkenstein Coat of Arms

Baroque shield Argent hammer and mallet Azure in saltire, supported in chief by an angel winged Argent and dressed Azure.
Meaning:
The local castle was first mentioned in 1266. Beneath a settlement developed as a fiefdom of the Reeves of Plauen. It was acquired by the Margraves of Meißen in 1389 and first mentioned as a city in 1463. A city council existed since 1649. Although Falkenstein had been a "freie Bergstadt", a city were mining rights had been given to single persons, the depletion of ore, tin and copper since the 15th century had been of little importance. Since the end of the 17th century weaving had been the main business line. Since the 19th century metal processing was introduced. The former arms displayed a canting falcon proper supporting an inescutcheon containing hammer and mallet, the symbols of mining. The oldest city seal displayed a bend above from a chevron. Hammer and mallet were introduced in 1643 and the supporter had been an angel, which was replaced by the falcon in 1900. The angel was restored after 1989.
