Shield Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules and surrounded by three gunstones ordered 2:1.
Meaning:
Probably around 1200 the Reeves of Straßberg built the Voigtsburg Castle, which means castle of the reeves. The castle was first mentioned in 1270. In 1327 the area was acquired by the Reeves of Plauen and in 1356 by the Margraves of Meißen, 1547 again by the Reeves of Plauen and finally in 1569 by the Electors of Sachsen. A city council existed since 1357, in 1367 the new town (Neustadt) was first mentioned. The council acquired the local cognisance since 1465. Between 1511 and 1674 Oelsnitz had been the most important location of mining in the Vogtland. Mining ended in 1687. Afterwards textiles industry became the main business line. The arms are based on the oldest city seal from the 15th century. The lion is the heraldic animal of the Margraves of Meißen. The gunstones, in German blason are denoted as black balls, no discs, and are interpreted as rivets and are a distinguishing mark.
