Franzburg Coat of Arms

Shield Azure; a castle Argent masoned Sable with port Azure, charged with a griffin passant Gules armed Or, three embattled towers, the central tower on top of a dome Gules also topped by another dome Gules, all towers topped by crosslets pommy Or, in chief an impending initial Or "F" at dexter and a "B" at sinister, both topped by golden coronets.
Meaning:
Duke Bogislaw XIII of Pommern-Barth built a fortress on the ruins of the Cistercian Neuenkamp Abbey from 1579 until 1587. In 1587 he also founded in cooperation with other noblemen a city exclusively for merchants and craftsmen. The castle got the name Franzburg in order to honour his father in law Duke Franz of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Franzburg was seat of the Dukes of Pommern Barth until 1605. During the 30-Years-War castle and city were nearly completely destroyed by imperial troops. Since 1648 the city belonged to Sweden. After 1722 the high street was rebuilt and a new town was established. The city suffered heavily under blazes since the 18th century, the last in 1925. As a result the seat of Franzburg County was transferred to Barth, and the city again lost importance. The arms are based on city seals from 1612. The castle is either a representation of the local castle and furthermore a canting element, the 2nd syllable of its name means "castle". The griffin is alluding to the fact that the city was a part of Pommern. Initials and coronets are referring to founder Bogislaw and name giver Franz. The flag colours are those of Pommern.

The arms are traditional. The current pattern was fixed before 1978 and was published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.45. A city flag was never approved officially.

Velgast Coat of Arms

Shield parted per bend sinister, above right Azure, a rack Or with three plough shares, beneath left Argent an oak leaf Vert in bend sinister.
Meaning: The village suffered heavily under several wars, among them the 30-Years-War, the Great Northern War and the Napoleonic Wars and there especially under the French occupation. The charges are alluding to agriculture and forestry. The number three is alluding to three phases of agricultural development, Velgast became a village of farmers in 1618, the seat of a domain in 1645 and a peoples own estate after 1945. The tinctures white and blue are those of Pommern.
