Shield Argent, an embattled tower Gules masoned Sable with port Argent on top of a triplemount Vert issuant from base, issuant from tower a demi-lion rampant double queued, crowned and armed Or, tongued Gules
Meaning:
A settlement under a castle on the Rugard hill already existed in the 12th century. The village was first mentioned in 1232 as Gora, in 1314 as Villa Montis and in 1318 as Bergen. After the Princes of Rügen had died out, it became a dominion of the Dukes of Pommern in 1325. In the 15th century Bergen gained the status of a market town and in 1613 of a city. Since 1637 it was administrated by Sweden, since 1648 it became a part of Sweden and since 1815 of Prussia. The arms are based on a city seal from 1613. The existence of prints was proven since 1654. Triplemount and tower are canting, displaying a settlement on a hill, the lion is a differentiation of the arms of the Princes of Rügen. Bergen was the seat of former Rügen County.
