Warendorf County Coat of Arms

Shield Gules parted by a bend wavy Or, in sinister chief and dexter base is a 10-point estoile.
Meaning:
The wavy line is taken from the coat of arms of the city of Beckum. Beckum was before the capital of another county today being the southern part of Warendorf county. The city of Beckum had however three silver lines. The tinctures had been changed to turn out, that the Bishops of Münster were rulers until 1803. The estoiles are taken from the coat of arms of Warendorf's reeves (German: Vögte) of the bishops. They were mere flowery ornaments. In 1938 they were reinterpreted as sun-wheels under NS-rule.

Flag, banner and arms were approved on 20 May 1976 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Münster.

Warendorf County old Coat of Arms (1938 - 1974)

Shield Or a fess Gules charged with three 10-point estoiles Or in fess.
Meaning:
The arms are basically those of the Bishopric of Münster, to which the county belonged until 1803. The additional estoiles (German: Rosetten) are taken from the arms of the reeves of Warendorf. Their family arms had three stars instead. The family name was Vogt of Warendorpe, in this case the title turned to a family name. The family administrated Warendorf since 1232.

The arms were approved on 1 February 1938 by Prussian Minister of State. The flag was approved on 10 July 1952 by Minister of Interior of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The symbols were abolished on 31 December 1974.

Beckum County Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a bend wavy Or.
Meaning:
The county arms are based on the city arms. The pattern was reduced to one canting bend wavy, as the location was called "Heim bei den Bächen" (= home near the creeks), shortly in Lower German "Beckum". Similar patterns already existed on seals from the 13th century and coins of copper from the 16th century. The colours are those of the Bishopric of Münster, to which the area historically belonged. The county was established in 1816 under Prussian rule.

Klaus-Michael Schneider, 17 May 2020

The arms were approved on 10 May 1951 by Minister of Interior of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The flag was adopted at least on 21 November 1969, mentioned in the local Hauptsatzung. The symbols were abolished on 31 December 1974.
