Meaning:
In 1787 the Oldenburger Hafenanstalt (Oldenburg Harbour Company) was established. Around the harbour since 1796 a market town developed, which gained city rights in 1856, but it was entitled to use proper symbols not before 1911. The upper half is combining the modified eagle of Eastern Frisia (Ostfriesland) and the arms of the Grand-Duchy of Oldenburg. The lower half is symbolising the importance of shipping and harbour. The pennants fly the colours of Oldenburg.
The arms were granted on 3 July 1911 by the Grand-Duke of Oldenburg.
