Bad Salzungen Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a bishop dressed Or with mitre Or and shoes Gules, holding a crozier Or by his right hand and a book Gules covered by a cross Sable by his left hand.
Meaning:
Salzungen had been a dominion of the Counts of Henneberg, who sold it to the Abbey of Fulda. The abbots granted city rights in 1306. It became a possession of the Wettin kin in 1366 and was seat of the Ernestine branch of the kin since 1485, although half the city belonged to other sovereigns between 1407 and 1577, the Archbishops of Mainz, the Bishops of Würzburg and the Counts of Henneberg. It was acquired in 1640 by Sachsen-Eisenach, in 1645 by Sachsen-Gotha and finally in 1680 by Sachsen-Meiningen, to which it belonged until 1918.
The name giving salt (German: Salz) was produced for centuries. Since 1321 salt production had been under control of a privileged guild (German: Pfännerschaft), lead by two salt counts (German: Salzgrafen), which had been elected for one year. Since 1590 thorn houses were built as Salinas, increasing the production of salt. Since 1833 high quality natural brine was extracted by drilling. Since 1821 a bath house existed and Salzungen since then had been de facto a spa and was called officially Bad Salzungen at least since 1858.
The bishop in the arms is St. Boniface, who proselytised the area and founded the abbey in nearby Fulda and the bishoprics of Würzburg and Erfurt. The saint already appeared on the oldest city seal from 1329 and also on all later seals until 1949.
Between 1949 and 1991 the city used different arms, displaying on a blue shield a white bend sinister wavy, in dexter chief a golden three level fountain pouring white waters, and in sinister base two golden interlocked cogwheels. The bend sinister was representing the Werra River, the fountain the spa and the cogwheels industries.
