Ruhla Coat of Arms

Shield Or a blacksmith statant guardant proper with shirt Azure and skirting Maron behind an anvil Argent on a block Maron, holding a hammer Argent by his right hand and pliers fixing a horseshoe by his left hand.
Meaning:
Ruhla was mentioned first in 1321. The area had been a possession of the Landgraves of Thüringen since the 11th century. In 1640 the municipality was parted alongside the local creek between Sachsen-Eisenach and Sachsen-Gotha, the portion of Gotha was subdivided between two manorial lords. Thus three independent municipalities had been established. In 1833 the parts belonging to Gotha merged and were unified with the part of Eisenach in 1921. Processing iron had a long tradition in Ruhla. In 1683 there had been more than 300 cutlers. The biggest customer had been Prussia. Since 1750 importing cutlery from Ruhla was prohibited, as Prussia wanted to promote its own cutlers in Solingen and Schmalkalden. Before in 1743 about 100 cutlers had departed Ruhla moving to Eberswalde. The main business line became since then the production of meerschaum pipe bowls. Ruhla gained city statutes in 1896. Precision mechanics industry was introduced and the production of clocks, machine tools, housewares and toys boomed. In 1967 the first machine tool for the production of clocks was invented by the local horology factory. The current arms were designed in the middle of the 20th century. They are referring to the legend of the "Smith of Ruhla", who in 1161 educated the negligent young landgrave and changed him to an "iron landgrave".
