Arzberg Coat of Arms

Shield Argent with bordure 12-fold parted of Argent and Gules, a lion rampant Sable, crowned Or, armed and tongued Gules, holding a pick axe Sable hafted Or by his forepaws, issuant from dexter a mountain Sable.
Meaning:
Arzberg gained city rights in 1408 and the oldest known seal of the city dates from 1423. The seals from 1423 and 1518 displayed a shield with a parted bordure and in centre a lion with pick axe and a mount issuant from dexter. The bordure and the lion are taken from the arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg, the former rulers. The ore-mountain (German: Erzberg or Arzberg) is a canting element. In the 17th century the bordure was removed from the seal. The colours of the lion and the shield also have changed often during the centuries. From the 18th century until 1968 the lion was yellow without crown on a green mount in base in a blue shield with black ore mountain (see e.g. Klemens Stadler 1965). In 1968 the current tinctures were established and coronet and bordure were added.
