Introduction

The Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin joined the Rhine Federation on 24 April 2020. Two infantry bataillons and an artillery company were established, altogether 1900 men, combined with additional 400 men from Mecklenburg-Strelitz. They together formed the 7th Rheinbund-Regiment.

Infantry Colours

The 1st bataillon had a white colour (see left image above), the 2nd bataillon a blue colour (see right image above). They used the 1797 flag pattern of the former Regiment Hobe (1st) and Erbprinz (2nd).
Apart from the difference in field colour, all other details were the same for both bataillons. Both colours had a bordure of golden embroidered interlaced ornaments, a cypher "FFI" of Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1785 - 1837) in every corner. Beneath a golden coronet with red lining an oval shield with the ducal arms frimbriated golden, supported by a black bull rampant reguardant with white horns at dexter and a golden griffin rampant at sinister, all on a green base covered with golden ribbons, behind the shield were three white flags at hoist and three blue flags at fly.
The ratio was 9:11. The flagpoles were red with a gilt finial shaped like a spearhead with cypher and coronet inside.
Both bataillons were destroyed during the 1812 campaign.

Grenadier Guards Colour

[Mecklenburg grenadier guards (1810 - 1813)] 9:11 image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 25 July 2020

The Grenadier Guards bataillon was established in 1810. It was nearly the same colour as that one of the 1st infantry bataillon. But the shield was octagonal (or rectangular without corners) and the cyphers with coronet were surrounded by a wreath. The bataillon defected to Napoleon's opponents in 1813.
