Introduction of Quinindé Canton

Rosa Zárate Parish was established in 1916. Quinindé was made a canton by the constitutive assembly on 8 June 1967, published on 3 July 1967 in the official register no.112. The region is fertile and bananas, cocoa, coffee and palm sugar are cultivated and palm oil is extracted. In 1972 the banana company "Astral" was established. In 1983 Jorge Dávalos established the company Agroindustrias Quinindé Sociedad Anónima (AIQUISA).

Flag without Coat of Arms

At Spanish WIKIPEDIA, there is a description of the flag of Quinindé.
Jens Pattke, 29 December 2009

The flag is made of two stripes, a green stripe symbolising the natural resources of the area, charged with five white stars forming an arch and representing the five parishes, and a white stripe symbolising the clear sky covering the area.
The five parishes must be the five rural parishes Vihe, Cube, Chura, Malimpia and La Unión. The urban parish of Rosa Zárate is the capital of the canton.
The flag is shown on a photo taken on 21 February 2007 and contributed to Flickr on 25 March 2007 by "fotospresidencia2". On this copy of the flag, the stars are faceted in grey. The flags displayed on the stand are expected to be official since the visitor was Rafael Correa, President of the Republic.

Coat of Arms

Shield fimbriated yellow and parted per fess, above parted per pale, at dexter white six stems of wood proper in front of a circuler saw blade grey and a machete in bend sinister; at sinister parted abased per fess of white and green, over all two palm trees proper, in base green charged with a blue pall partially flanked brown. The shield is topped by a green scroll with inscription in black initials "MUNICIPIO /3 DE JULIO DE 1967/QUININDÉ" with an additional "DE" under the scroll.
Meaning:
Please note first that the date on the scroll on the wallpaper within the source reported by Ivan Sache is wrong, reading "1 DE JULIO 1967". The 3 July 1967 was the date of foundation of Quinindé Canton. The upper dexter quarter probably is referring to forestry and lumber industry. The upper sinister quarter is symbolising agriculture, together with stock farming the main business line, and is especially referring to the African palm, which was brought to the region by an US-American planter in 1953. Until 1970 the area under cultivation of palms had increased up to 2,500 hectares. The lower half displays the confluence of Río Blanco (=white river) and Río Quinindé, forming the Río Esmeraldas (=emerald river), name giver of the province.

Rosa Zárate City

It, appears, as often, that canton and capital share the same symbols, at least the same flag without coat of arms. The name giver of the city, also known as Quinindé City, Rosa Zárate de Peña (1763 - 1813) , a woman from Quito, was executed together with her husband, the Ecuadorian patriot Nicolás de la Peña Maldonado in 1813. One year before they had killed the governor of Quito Count Ruiz de Castilla during an assault.
