Presentation of Benizalón

The municipality of Benizalón (293 inhabitants in 2008; 3,200 ha) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 60 km north-east of Almería.
Most historical sources on Benizalón date from later than the Alpujarra Revolt and the expelling of the Moriscos. Benizalón, together with the villages of Alcudia de Monteagud, Tahal, Lucainena de las Torres and a few more located today in the Province of Granada, formed the "Estado de Tahalá", owned by Enrique Enríquez de Guzmán, subsequently transferred to the Marquis of Aguilafuente.

Azure a mount vert flanked sinister by a star or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The red castle represents one of the four most important fortresses of the municipality, known as castillico. The cross stands for the mission cross erected on a hill norh-east of the municipality. The white castle represents the fortress of Benimina (Belemina), an important settlement nucleus during the feudal rule of the Enríquez. The mount stands for the hill of Montahur (Montagud), surmounted by a Muslim-Spanish fortress. The star represents the light that appears at dawn over the hill.
