The municipality of Instinción (480 inhabitants in 2013; 3,300 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km north-west of Almería.

Symbols of Instinción

The flag and arms of Instinción, adopted on 25 April 2001 by the Municipal Council and revised on 8 March 2002, as suggested on 25 October 2001 by the Royal Academy of Cordóba, are prescribed by Decree No. 196, adopted on 2 July 2002 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 27 July 2002 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 88, p. 14,397 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag in proportions 1:1.5, yellow, tierced in base by a purple stripe. In the center of the panel, in proportional dimensions, is placed the municipal coat of arms, with the or and argent tinctures replaced by the yellow and white colours, respectively.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Purpure wavy fesses argent and azure in chief a bunch of grapes or in base an olive flower argent with pistils gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The waves represent river Almería that waters lands rich in citrus groves. Grapevine and olive are ancestral cultures. The purple colour recalls the Cárdenas lineage, linked to the Duchy of Maqueda, which once included Instinción.
