Presentation of Casas de Reina

The municipality of Casas de Reina (197 inhabitants in 2017; 5,560 ha; municipal website) is located 130 km south-east of Badajoz and 10 km south-east of Llerena.

Casas de la Reina keeps the ruins of the Roman town of Regina Turdulorum (website), founded in the 1st century as the merger of smaller population nuclei, most probably to exploit the neighboring mines.
The town was located in a suitable environment, rich in arable and woods and with a non-limiting water supply. It was also located on a strategic road connecting Corduba (Córdoba) and Hispalis (Seville) to Augusta Emerita (Mérida). Pliny the Elder and other writers report that Regina Turdulorum was administratively part of Baeturia Turdulorum, subsequently Conventus Cordubensis. Archeological excavations have revealed that some of the inhabitants of the town were of Italian or Eastern origin; cult was dedicated to the Roman official deities but also to eastern and local ones. The town flourished under the Flavian dynasty. It was mentioned for the last time in the Acts of the 2nd Hispalis Council, presided in 610 by St. Isidor of Seville, while competing with Celti (Peñaflor) for the jurisdiction over a basilica.
The ruins of the Roman theater are located 1.5 km from the village. The theater, whose cavea, orchestra and scene are perfectly preserved, could accommodate 800 spectators, which indicates the wealth of the town at the time. The facade of the theater was excavated in 1987.

After the Muslim conquest, the population moved up to the hill, settling a citadel known as Alcazaba de Reina.
Once reconquered by the Christians, Casas de Reina was the seat of a commandery of the Order of Saint James ruling seven villages. Part of the León province of the Order in 1594, the village counted them 181 households.
