Presentation of Torrenueva Costa

The municipality of Torrenueva Costa (2,514 inhabitants in 2018; 641 ha) is located 10 km south-east of Motril.
The municipality was established by Decree No. 184 issued on 2 October 2018 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 9 October 2018 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 196, pp. 122-142 (text).

The submunicipal entity of Torrenueva was established within the municipality of Motril by an Agreement adopted on 14 July 1987 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 11 September 1987 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 77, p. 4,494 (wtext). On 29 November 2012, the Provincial Council initiated the process of separation of Torrenueva from Motril. The request was approved on 5 November 2014 by the Municipal Council of Motril and on 29 October 2015 by the Provincial Council, which forwarded it to the Directorate General of the Local Administration.

Torrenueva is of Roman origin, as evidence by the remains excavated in El Marante. Subsequent archeological campaigns have yielded ceramics dated to the 10th century, which allowed identification of the site as the Moorish alquería of Paterna / Batarna, once exploiting mines and saltworks. The village is named for the New Watch Tower (Torre Atalaya Nueva), erected in the 18th century.
The new municipality had to change its name since another municipality called Torrenueva already existed, in Castilla-La Mancha (Province of Ciudad Real). Some 1,500 inhabitants participated to the electronic vote, with the following result:
- Torranueva Costa: 46%;
- Torre-Nueva: 11%;
- Others: 36% (including Torrenueva del Mar, Torrenueva Paraíso Tropical, La Torre, Costa Coral, Mar y Sol, Torrepeis, New Tower Beach, Torrepole, Playa Dulce, Torre Bella, Sacratif, Trafalcasis, Siempre Viva, Caribe Espa&ntild;ol, Torrenueva Granada, Torre Nova...)

Symbols of Torrenueva Costa

Torrenueva Costa kept in use the symbols of the submunicipal entity of Torrenueva.
The flag and arms of Torrenueva, adopted on 7 March 2002 by the Municipal Council and revised on 23 October 2002, as suggested by the Royal Academy of Córdoba, are prescribed by Decree No. 16, adopted on 28 January 2003 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 14 February 2003 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 31, p. 3,399 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text)
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of two equal vertical stripes, green at hoist charged in canton with a yellow sun surrounding a green disk and a white tower, blue at fly with, in the lower half, three white wavy stripes in height 1/12 of the flag's hoist.
Coat of arms: Azure a sun or filled vert charged with a watching tower argent masoned sable; a bordure or inscribed with the motto "TURRIS NOVA NOVA EST" in letters sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The tower represents the village's namesake, making the arms canting. The tower is surrounded by a sun as the source of energy that enlights the social and economical activity of the municipality, also symbolizing the local micro-climate. The blue part represents the fishers who live from the sea.
