Presentation of Matanza

The municipality of Matanza (246 inhabitants in 2009; 5,358 ha) is located in the southeast of León Province, 50 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Matanza del Oteros, Valdespino Cerón and Zalamillas.

In 2008, the tennis player Virginia Ruano was awarded the title of "preferred daughter" by the Municipal Council of Matanza, where part of her family lives (article). "Vivi" Ruano (b. 1973) won two silver medals in women's doubles in the 2004 (with Conchita Martínez) and 2008 (with Anabel Medina) Olympics. She also won the women's doubles in the French Open (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009), in the Australian Open (2004) and in the US Open (2002, 2003, 2004), all with Paola Suárez but 2008 and 2009 with Anabel Medina.
Matanza is the birth place of Justina González Morillla (1903-1997; biography), the first woman to graduate in Veterinary Science in Spain.

Symbols of Matanza

The flag and arms of Matanza, designed by Vincent Tocino, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 26 March 2004 by the Municipal Council, signed on 28 April 2004 by the Mayor, and published on 10 May 2004 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 87, pp. 6,362-6,363 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag in proportions 2:3, made of five [horizontal] stripes with proportions 1/8, 1/8, 1/2, 1/8 and 1/8, the outer and the central stripe white, the intermediate stripe red, with a red sword and scimitar crossed per saltire in the central stripe.
Coat of arms: Gules a sword and a scimitar argent per saltire in basewavy argent and azure. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The symbols were unveiled on 6 October 2004 during the Cañamona Festival (Diario de León, 6 October 2004).
