Presentation of San Agustín del Guadalix

The municipality of San Agustín del Guadalix (12,982 inhabitants in 2015; 3,830 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km north of Madrid.

San Agustín del Guadalix was conquered from the Iberians by Caius Flaminius' troops. During the Reconquest, most villagers were enrolled in 877 by Mohamed I, Emir of Córdoba, to fight the Christians. In 932, the Christian crossed Somosierra and Guadarrama and expelled the Moors. After this campaign, San Agustín remained a no man's land located between the two armies in conflict.
In 1084, King Alfonso VI seized San Agustín on his way against Toledo and resettled the area with Castilians. In 1382, Juan I transferred the village and domain of San Agustín to Pedro González de Mendoza. The family kept them until 1461 when another Pedro González de Mendoza, Bishop of Calahorra and son of the famous Marquis of Santillana, swapped it for other doamins with Diego Arias de Ávila, Contador mayor of Enrique IV. His descendants were the Counts of Puñonrostro, whose coat of arms is used today as the municipal arms of San Agustín.
In the 16tj century, Queen Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad) granted to San Agustín the title of villa, "authorized to use gallows, spear, block, chain, whip and other signs and tools of jurisdiction and justice." The northern part of Valdelagua was incorporated into the town.

Symbols of San Agustín del Guadalix

The flag (photo, photo, photos, photo, photo) and arms of San Agustín de Guadalix are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 14 May 2015 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 1 June 2015 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 128, pp. 266-267 (text), and on 11 June 2015 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 139, pp. 49,606-49,607 (text).
The symbols were originally approved on 10 March 2004 by the Municipal Council. The Royal Academy "Matritense" of Heraldry and Genealogy and the Royal Academy of History proposed some modifications, which were accepted by the Municipal Council on 27 June 2013 and eventually approved on 27 February 2014. The revised symbols were validated on 29 April 2014 by the Royal Academy "Matritense" of Heraldry and Genealogy.
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: In proportions 2:3, horizontally divided in three stripes, the upper, green, the central, white, and the lower, red, the central stripe being twice wider than the other.
Coat of arms: Tierced per mantel, 1. Argent a cross flory gules, 2. Argent an eagle sable, 3. Gules a castle argent port and windows sable. A bordure azure charged with seven five-pointed stars or. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History rejected the proposed arms, which were made of the arms of the Arias Davila lineage with a bordure gules charged with the seven stars of the Community of Madrid. The bordure is not acceptable, since it could equally represent any municipality in the Community; it was recommended to replace it with elements more specific of the municipality.
The Academy validated the proposed flag "without any objection".

The flag in actual use is charged in the middle with the municipal coat of arms.
