The municipality of Cillórigo de Liébana (1,166 inhabitants; 10,400 ha) is located 115 km from Santander. The capital of the municipality is the village of Tama.

Flag of Cillórigo de Liébana

The flag and arms of the municipality of Cillórigo de Liébana were adopted on 2 February 1996.

The flag (photo) is vertically divided red-white-green. Red recalls the coat of arms; white stands for the snow that covers the Picos de Europa (2,648 m) most of the year; and green stands for the landscape of the municipality.

The coat of arms is "Per fess, 1. Argent a fleur-de-lis azure, 2. Gules a spur or. The shield surmounted with a Spanish Royal crown".
The fleur-de-lis represents the St. Mary church in Lebena, a village part of the municipality. Founded in 925 by Count Alfonso, this is the most important jewel of Mozarabic architecture in Cantabria.
The spur represents the Cavalry Academy, which was founded in the village of Colio, part of the municipality, by General Diaz Porlier during the War of Independence (1808-1814). The Cavalry Academy was the base of the 7th Division, later the Cantabrian Army. Until recently, people from Colio celebrated the Cavalry Academy by wearing shoes with spurs during local festivals; they were nicknamed espolistas.
