Presentation of Monterrubio

The municipality of Monterrubio (70 inhabitants in 2009; 2,554 ha; unofficial webpage) is located in the southwest of Segovia Province, 30 km from Segovia.

Monterrubio (more or less, "the red mount") is named for a reddish forest, probably here oaks in their fall colors. The village was most probably settled by colonists coming from Monterrubio de la Demanda (Burgos Province) during the resettlement campaigns organized by Kings Fernando I (1037-1065) and Alfonso VI (1065-1109). Monterrubio was mentioned in 1162, when the Bishop of Segovia transferred the church of the village of San Martín de Hayuela (then known as El Tobar, long disappeared), belonging to Monterrubio, to the abbey of Párraces. A Bull signed by Pope Innocent IV on 5 May 1247 confirms that the abbey owned goods in Monterrubio, although it did not rule the village.
In the 15th-16th centuries, Monterrubio belonged to the Community of the Town and Land of Segovia. In the 17th-19th centuries, Monterrubio mostly belonged to the Count of Molina Herrera, a title granted on 27 June 1627 by King Philip IV to Pedro Mexía de Tobar y Velázquez, Knight of the Order of Saint James and member of the Council of Finances (Concejo de Hacienda).
