Introduction

A number of movies was made about Superman. The exact location of Metropolis, the city where Superman where lives, is intentionally kept vague, but one of the scenes showing Metropolis in Superman II shows distinctly the pre-9/11 Manhattan skyline.

Daily Planet

Flag

In Superman II, this flag can be seen on the Daily Planet building: A blue flag with centred a white globe with black lines and red landmasses, with a white ribbon going around it, with "DAILY PLANET" on it, edged and lettered black and sticking out from behind the globe near the bottom at both sides, which in all is the emblem of the Daily Planet, and around that emblem the text "Daily * * * Planet * * * * * * *" in the font of the Daily Planet (exactly three and seven stars). The face of the globe shows the Old World. Some of the shots show that the image is in obverse on both sides of the flag. Also, one of the poles apparently flies the flag upper edge down.

Banner?

Superman IV has two scenes that include a flag of the Daily Planet standing in the background. The folds don't show much of it, but it appears to differ from the one visible in Superman II in several ways:

  • The whole emblem is on a red disk, or if you will the text outside the globe is on a red ring.
  • Seas are light blue and landmasses appear to be white.
  • The lettering on the ribbon might well be golden.
  • Though there's not really a lot of landmass to see, at the top it seems more consistent with the normal emblem of the Daily Planet, showing the New World.

In all, I don't think this choice of colours would be distinctive enough for a flag flying several stories above the street. Since we're seeing it standing indoors only, I would instead describe this as the standard of the Daily Planet.

Other flags

In Superman: The Movie there's a scene in a police station, where we see on one side a S&S and the other side a flag with three columns, Blue, White and Orange, with a blue seal on the white, which could well be the flag of New York City. Also, a power boat flies the burgee of the Atlantis Yacht Club, New Jersey.

On the other hand, in Superman II, there's the flag seen most plainly flying from the flag poles outside the window of the office of the editor in chief of the Daily Planet, flying between two S&S-s. It can only be seen on the evening that Superman stands on one of the flagpoles, and in that case, the flag flown is the flag of Indiana.

In Superman II also, in some shots the flag poles on the Daily Planet building are placed centred on the face of the building, when Superman stands on one of them, but in other shots they are placed more to the left, as someone goes through the window and the poles have to be out of the way. There, there are four flags, alternating S&S and Daily Planet flag.

Apparently neither director managed to resolve these inconsistencies in a satisfactory manner.
