Presentation of Mooslargue

The municipality of Mooslargue (420 inhabitants in 2018; 563 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km south of Mulhouse, on the border with Switzerland. The municipality was established in 1975 as the merger of the former municipalities of Moos and Niederlarg.

Moos and Niderlarg emerged around two mills built in the Grumbach valley, on the Roman road connecting Largitzen to Durlinsdorf. The Moos mill belonged to the monks of Saint-Ursanne and Lucelle, while the Niederlarg mill belonged to the Jesuits of Feldbach.
The two villages have always been sharing the church and the school.

Flag of Mooslargue

The flag of Mooslargue (photo, p. 14) is a square banner of the municipal arms, "Vert a wavy bend argent with three crosslets gules cantonned by two mill wheels or."

The arms, designed in 1976 by Morand Rederstorff, recall the merger of Moos and Niederlarg.
The mill wheel has been the emblem of Moos since the 17th century; the Armorial Général shows the arms of Moos as "Argent a mill wheel sable in base the letters 'M' and 'S' of the same" (image).
Niederlarg never used arms.
The field vert represents a marshy area, in Middle Age German, "Moos".
The bend wavy argent represents stream Petite Largue (now, Grumbach). According to an old local belief, crosslets protected mills. The two wheel recall that each of the two villages had its own mill.
