Presentation of Labin

The Town of Labin / Albona (12,428 inhabitants in 2001, 7904 in the town of Labin) is located 30 km north-east of Pula.
The town of Labin / Albona was occupied by the Italian forces at the end of the First World War. It was then annexed by Italy after the Treaty of Rapallo (12 November 1920). On 2 March 1921 the miners of Albona made a strike and proclaimed the "Republic of Albona", with a clearly Socialist organization. Soon encircled by the army, the town surrendered without fighting on 8 April 1921. The leaders of the strikers were put on trial and acquitted by the tribunal of Pola / Pula.

Flag of Labin

The symbols of Labin are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Labina, published in 1993 in the Town official gazette Službeni novine Grada Labina, No. 3.
The symbols are described in the Town Statutes Statut Grada Labina, adopted on 9 October 2001 by the Town Assembly and published in Službeni novine Grada Labina. This is repeated in the today's Town Statutes Statut Grada Labina, adopted on 6 April 2006 by the Town Assembly and published in Službeni novine Grada Labina, No. 4.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, red with the coat of arms, in full colors, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Labin

The coat of arms is described in the Town Statutes as "the historical coat of arms, in an oval (egg-like) shield argent a red convex cross bordered with a golden hatched ring, all on a silver cartouche flanked on both sides with three horizontal red lines and with green lily branches in the base".
The lower end of the cartouche reminds a cog wheel, as Labin is the most industrially developed part of Istria.

Ceremonial flag of Labin

The ceremonial flag (photo, photo), apparently kept in the Town Assembly Hall, is a red gonfalon ending triangularly and with three tails, edged yellow and with a yellow fringe along the bottom. In the middle of it is the coat of arms in full colors and above it the name of the town.

Flag and arms from 1970s

[Flag]  [Flag] image by Željko Heimer, 7 June 2024

The flag from the 1970s is presented here, shown decorated vertically but was more often used as a horizontal flag.

The flag of the municipality of Labin in the socialist period was red with the municipal emblem next to the spear turned as if to stand out upright. The emblem shows an entire stone doorframe with crossed hammers in the headstone - the entrance to the mine, and inside it a representation of a city on top of a black mountain, the yellow upper part in which is written "KOVA JE NASA" (the shaft is ours), and above the date "2.III 1921" (Candlemas) - miners' holiday and the beginning of the miners' uprising in 1921, when the short-lived Republic of Labin was established.

Unofficial flags of Labin

A red flag with a (white) monochromous representation of the town arms was used in the 1990s, even after the adoption of the official flag in 1993. I have seen the same flag in yellow or blue instead of red on several places in the town. A whiteflag with the coat of arms in full colors was also reported.
