Presentation of Vinodol

The municipality of Vinodol (3,530 inhabitants in 2011) is the only municipality in Croatia that has its name in adjective form, for historical reasons. Therefore its name in Croatian is formally Vinodolska Općina (The Municipality of Vinodol). The seat of the municipal administration is the town of Bribir (1,695 inh.), the cradle of the very important Frankopan family, Dukes of Krk and Bribir.

Flag of Vinodol

The symbols of Vinodol are prescribed by DEcision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Vinodolske općine, adopted on 27 November 2013 by the Municipality Assembly. The companion Decision Odluka o utvrđivanju mjerila ta upotrebu grba i zastave, adopted the same day, determines the modes of use of the symbols. The two Decisiosns are supposed to be issued in the County official gazette, but were not so far - the first Decision explicitly states that it shall be published only after approval of the adopted symbols by the Ministry.

The flag is prescribed in Article 4 of the Decision as follows:

The flag of the municipality is Bordeaux red, with a ratio of length to width of 2:1, in accordance with the legal prescriptions.
In the centre of the flag at the crossing point of the diagonals is the coat of arms of the Municipality of Vinodol outlined with a golden-yellow ribbon. The height of the coat of arms on the flag is 2/3 of the width (height) of the flag.

The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 3 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Vinodol is in the shape of a triangular, heart-shaped, [horizontally] divided shield. In the shield chief coloured golden-yellow, taking up 1/4 of the width (height) of the shield, is an arm holding a paintbrush, while underneath is a Bordeaux red field of the shield, and in the centre of the shield in the Bordeaux red field - in top a golden-yellow Frankopan's star under which there are two stylized, interlaced golden-yellow bunches of grapes hanging from green branches and leaves of grapevine.

The coat of arms is obviously inspired by the historical arms of the Frankopan ("Per fess gules a mullet or and of the last"). The grapevine makes the arms canting, the name of the municipality meaning "Grapevine Valley".
The hand holding a paintbrush must be a reference to the famous miniaturist Giorgio Giulio Clovio - Croata (Julije Klović), born in the 16th century in the village of Grižane, part of the municipality (among his masterworks is the historical coat of arms of the Town of Ilok).

The flag of Vinodol is described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Vinodolske, adopted on 15 March 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 May 2006 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 19.
The symbols were rejected by the Ministry of Administration, probably so many other municipalities and towns that have historical connection to the Frankopan already show some of their symbols, and are no longer described in the 2009 Municipality Statutes.

The flag is described as in proportions 1:2, "petroleum green" with the coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms, designed by G. Blažević, from Novi Vinodolski, is in the traditional shape of the coat of arms of Bribir, adapting the contents, as "Azure a valley with steep mountains vert beneath it a barrulet wavy also azure and in the base a bunch of grapes or slipped and with two leaves vert and in the chief a mullet or".
The mullet is a reference to the Frankapan. The arms are canting, Vinodol meaning "The Wine Valley".
