Presentation of Sunja

The municipality of Sunja (7,376 inhabitants in 2001, 1,397 in the village of Sunja) is located some 20 km south-east from Sisak, on the right bank of river Sava - actually on river Sunja that from that point flows in parallel with Sava for another 20 or so km.

Flag of Sunja

The symbols of Sunja are prescribed by Decision Odluka o odabiru motiva za izradu idejnog rješenja grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 12 November 2002 by the Municipality Council and published on 13 November 2002 in the official gazette Službeni vjesnik, No. 21.
Decision Odluka o mjerilima za uproabu grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 18 May 2004 by the Municipality Council and published on 19 May 2004 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 18, repeats the description of the coat of arms and the flag from the 2002 Decision, but not of the ceremonial flag (which is not unusual). It invalidates the previous Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Sunja, published in 1995 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 17. This means that before the currents symbols an other set of symbols was used, even if probably not approved by the Ministry of Administration.
The Decision was amdended as Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o mjerilima za uporabu grba i zastave Općine Sunja, adopted on 5 June 2012 and published on 8 June 2012 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 19 (text); the changes deal with responsibilities in the process of grant of use for commercial use of the symbols.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.

The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the middle. When depicted on the official flags, the coat of arms is made in darker blue shade than on its own or in the ceremonial flag.

The former symbols of Sunja were prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Sunja, adopted on 13 December 1995 by the Municipality Council and published on 14 December 1995 in Službeni vjesnik, No. 17.

Article 7 describes the flag as follows:

The flag of the Municipality of Sunja is in the dimensions 120 x 240 cm, coloured green and blue, characterizing the rivers, lakes, old branched streams of Sava, the Lonja field, plains and wooded areas of the municipality. The intersection of the colours depicts a cross, symbol of Christianity, always present in our region.

Article 6 describes the coat of arms as follows:

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Sunja has dimensions of 65 x 50 cm. It is located at the centre of a flag, and by its colours and symbols it depicts the following contents:
- the shield shape ending with a defensive wall as a symbol of defence and invincibility;
- the background of the coat of arms is green and made as the folk embroidery called Vutlak*, symbolizing plains and woods, while the gray colour of the defensive wall symbolizes fertile fields;
- the red white fields symbolize the settlements of the municipality, and the blue river Sava - together they form the set of red, white and blue of the Croatian tricolour;
- the old oakwood house** is a symbol of the Posavina wooden housing;
- the stork is a symbol of new life and it is specially linked for the region of the municipality.
Through the central area of the coat of arms, there passes a wattle, symbol of all Croatians, shown in the Posavina embroidery coloured yellow, symbolizing the sun as the source of life.

*Vutlak is the folk name for textile embroidery and lace typical for the region, used for folk costumes and ecclesiastic garments.
**The word translated as "house" is in the original iža, a local dialect term for house in folk architecture.
