Presentation of Dicmo

The municipality of Dicmo (2,657 inhabitants in 2001) is located some 10 km north-east of Split, about half way between Split and Sinj.
Dicmo is the name of a karstic valley; no actual settlement bears the name of the municipality, which consists of seven villages. The seat of the municipal administration is in Kraj, the most populous village (432 inh.).
The name of the place comes from Latin decimus, "ten", being at the tenth milestone of the ancient Roman way from Split inwards. Two of the villages are jointly named Upper Dicmo, even though they are downstream in the lower Dicmo valley from the five remaining villages; the illogical name comes from the Venetian rule, when they named in 1699 Upper Dicmo those parts that remained under Ottoman rule.
Although small, Dicmo has yielded a number of important people - cultural, political and sportsmen -, including, abroad, Michael Anthony Bilandic (1923-2002), a former Mayor of Chicago (1978-1979).

Flag of Dicmo

The symbols of Dicmo (municipal website) are prescribed by Decision Odluku o grbu i zastavi općine Dicmo, adopted on 23 July 2014 by the Municipality Assembly (municipal website).

The symbols were designed by Božo Kokan, an architect and designer from Zagreb, otherwise known as the designer of most military symbols in Croatia since the mid-1990s (cf. his book Znakovi pobjednika - monografija crteža hrvatskih ratnih vojnih znakova, Školska knjiga, Zagreb, 2006).

The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered white, in the middle.

The coat of arms of Dicmo is "Barry of ten or and azure".
The ten stripes refer to the Roman name of the place, Decimin, or Ad Decimum Miliarium (At ten miles), the place on the road inlands from the province capital Salona (today Solin, near Split) where a milestone stood at one of the most important road crossings in Dalmatia. It is said in the description document that the golden stripes signify roads while blue stands for the sea coast from which the distance was measured.

The former flag of Dicmo (photo, photo) is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms in the middle.
The flag was seen with a slightly different coat of arms, having a golden border with white hatching, and "DICMO" written in black letters in the top part of the shield's border.

The coat of arms is "Azure a church argent within a bordure or barruletty argent".
The church depicted is the St. Jacob the Apostle parish church, with "an unusual and imposing belfry" (Vidović, 2004; Wikipedia), built in 1934.
