The municipalities of Borger and Odoorn merged 1 Jan 1998 to form the municipality of Borger-Odoorn. It is famous for its 'hunebedden' (old stone-age sites with huge boulders).
It adopted a new flag in 1999 (?), with as central element the municipal arms. (See below)

Borger-Odoorn Coat of Arms

[Borger-Odoorn Coat of Arms] image from the Borger-Odoorn municipal website.

The Coat of Arms has this meaning (according to Ralf Hartemink's site):

The municipality is on the "Hondsrug" range of hills. The territory of both former municipalities (Borger and Odoorn) was formerlt divided equally in sand and marsh. Both had also a small western part of marshes. This has been visualized in a shield-division of gold-black. These colors can also be found on the old municipal arms, so that it connects old and new.

The "boezelschup" (peat-digger) refers to the marshes, the "hunebed" (passage-grave) to the sand. The "boezelschup" has a specific form, only used in southeast Drenthe, and was used to divide mud evenly. The golden color refers to it being a wooden spade. In the municipality is the "Nationaal Hunebeddeninformatiecentrum", as well as 18 "hunebedden", spread over both former municipalities, more than in any other municipality. Both municipalities were mainly agricultural. So horses were chosen as supporters, which also refers to present day use of horses in sports (the Hippic center in Exloo, riding-school in Bronneger).

On the territory of Borger/Odoorn it is told that the legendary town of Hunsow existed a long time ago. The arms of Odoorn used to have that as its main element. Also in Bronneger in former municipality Borger the town is said to have existed. As it concerns both old municipalities a narrow pinnacled collar is put on the neck of the supporting horse (black, as it points at the legendary destruction of the town by fire).

Nieuw-Buinen

village of Nieuw-Buinen image located by Valentin Poposki, 10 December 2023

From https://www.mastenenvlaggen.nl/product/dorpsvlag-nieuw-buinen:

The flag of the village of Nieuw-Buinen (or Nei-Buun) has been in use in its current form since 2022. The flag was created in a design competition that was held at the four primary schools of the village for the 200th anniversary of Nieuw-Buinen. The final design is a combination of various proposals that came out best.

The Nieuw-Buiner flag is blue and has a horizontal orange stripe and a diagonal stripe consisting of five orange and blue lines. The flag features cheerful bunting lines at the top. The year 1823, the year in which Nieuw-Buinen was founded, is placed at the top left in white. The village name can be seen at the bottom in white. The village was created during the peat extraction east of Buinen. The silhouette of a glassblower can be seen on the right of the flag design. This is a statue by the sculptor Onno de Ruijter that stands in the middle of the village.
