Baranów commune
Baranów - rural commune, Puławy County, Lubelskie Voivodship - oldest name:
Wola Czołnowska (until 1933); older name: Baranów nad Wieprzem (1933-54)
Gmina Baranów is a rural commune in Puławy County, Lublin Voivodship,
in eastern Poland. Its seat is the village of Baranów, which lies approximately
20 kilometres (12 mi) north-east of Puławy and 46 km (29 mi) north-west
of the regional capital Lublin.
Area: 85.03 sq.km (32.8 sq.mi); Population: 4,228 (2006).
Land under cultivation - 69%; forests - 21%
One village in the area existed already in 1334 (Laskowice). In 1503,
King Alexander bestowed the village "Lasskoucze" to one Mikołaj
Firlej and the Firlej Family of "Lewart" Coat of Arms developed the area,
including the town (later demoted to village) Baranów. (That's what happens
when you demolish your villagepump).
In 1930s, more than half of the local population was Jewish.
After three rejections in 2007 and 2008, the Heraldic Commission in
Warsaw finally approved the new symbols of Baranów on March 6, 2009.
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration gave its consent on
March 18, 2009 and the commune's council adopted it during the XXXV session
on April 16, 2009 making it official.
The Arms are based on the "Lewart" Coat of Arms of the Firlej Family.
The old Arms of the commune featured the ram's head and as the English
"ram" = Polish "baran", so it was directly related to the name of the village
and the commune. Now , the new Arms are related to the commune's history.
