It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain field quartered of yellow and red.

Shield Or on a fess wavy Azure charged with a barrulet wavy Argent, in chief a heraldic rose Gules of seven petals seeded Or and barbed Vert, in base a pine resin pot Gules dribbling Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VILELA DO TÂMEGA"

Vilela do Tâmega was one of the 30 communes of Chaves Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes ; it had 353 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 9,61 km².
