Presentation of Beyoğlu

The municipality of Beyoğlu (246,152 inhabitants in 2012; 866 ha) is located on the European side of İstanbul, separated from the old town (historic peninsula of Constantinople) by the Golden Horn. Known as Pera, the place was a flourishing Genoese colony, formally granted to the Republic of Genoa in 1273 by Emperor Michael VIII Paleologus.

Flag of Beyoğlu

The flag of Beyoğlu is white (photo, or red (photo, photo) with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".

The emblem of the municipality features the Galata Tower (photos).
The nine-story Galata Tower was the tallest building (66.90 m) of the town when it was built in 1348 during an expansion of the Genoese colony in Constantinople. The tower was called Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) by the Genoese and Megalos Pyrgos (The Great Tower) by the Byzantines. The Galata Tower was built to replace the Old Galata Tower, which controlled the northern end of the huge sea chain that closed the entrance to the Golden Horn Bay. The tower was mostly used as an observatory and a prison during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
The less-used French word galetas, "a garret", was derived from the Galata Tower.

Flag of Kasımpaşa, current and former versions - Images by Ivan Sache, 11 March 2016

Kasımpaşa Spor Kulübü was founded in 1921 as Altıntuğ. The club has been playing in the First League in 1959-1964, 2007-2008, 2009-2011, and since 2012.
The most famous player of the club is the Swedish international goalkeeper (127 caps since 2002) Andreas Isaksson (b. 1981), who played for Djurgården (Sweden, 2001-2004), Stade Rennais (France, 2004-2006), Manchester City (2006-2008) and PSV Eindhoven (2008-2012) before being signed by Kasımpaşa in 2012.

The flag of Kasımpaşa (photo, photo, photo) is horizontally divided blue-white (seven stripes) with the club's emblem in the middle.
The anchor recalls the shipyards established in Kasımpaşa by Mehmet II soon after the conquest of Constantinople. Aimed at consolidating the Ottoman Navy, the shipyards increased in the 17th century. Barracks and an Admiralty were established nearby. Once a poor and shanty borough, Kasımpaşa increased its fame thanks to the political ascent of its most famous son, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (b. 1954), Mayor of İstanbul (194-1998), Prime Minister (2003-2014) and
President (2014-) of the Turkish Republic, also the namesake of the Kasımpaşa S.K. stadium.
[Istanbul Guide]

The former flag of Kasımpaşa (photo) was white with the former club's emblem (1996-2012) in the middle.
