Description of the flag

Etowah County is in northeastern Alabama, and the county seat is the city of Gadsden. Etowah County is the smallest county in Alabama by area, but is also one of the most densely populated counties in the state. Originally named Baine County for Confederate General David Baine, Baine County was abolished in 1868 and Etowah County created in its place. The county's name comes from the Cherokee word for "edible tree."

According to this article sourced from the Gadsden Times, the flag of Etowah County, Alabama, was adopted in July 1968. During the county's centennial celebration in 1968, the Etowah County Centennial Committee sponsored a design contest for a flag which would be the official, permanent, county flag. The flag the Committee had picked to be the official flag, was a design made by Jean Marie Williams and Marie Denise Williams, two sisters who had just finished their respective grades in school at the time they won. When the sisters won the design contest, State Senator Ollie Nabors introduced a resolution in the Alabama State Legislature to designate the girls design as the official county flag; it was eventually adopted.

In 1985, the County Commission attempted to adopt a different flag, with much disagreement from the original designers; Commission Chairman Robert ''Booley'' Hitt had called for the design contest, saying the flag the girls had designed was merely a centennial flag. As a rebuttal, Ms. Williams presented several newspaper articles, a plaque, and the original flag to the Commission Chairman. After District Commissioner Wendall Bryant had been shown documentation proving the flags official status, the County Commission deterimined the 1968 flag was indeed the official county flag. Although the design contest was eventually rescinded, 165 school students from Attalla and Gadsden had already made proposals.

Sheriff's Office flag

Flag of the State of Alabama image by Randy Young, 21 June 2015

The flag of the Etowah County Sheriff's Office can be seen clearly behind the podium in the photograph of a press conference online at www.al.com, and in the accompanying video. The flag features the logo of the sheriff's office on an olive green field. Below the logo are the words "ETOWAH COUNTY, AL" in white capital sans serif letters. At a diagonal by the upper left portion of the logo is the word "SHERIFF'S" and at the upper right portion the diagonal word "OFFICE," both in similar, white capital letters. The logo has as its background a tan map of Etowah County. Superimposed on the map are crossed Alabama and American flags, with the star-shaped sheriff's badge in gold over all.
